I started recommending Zote soap on Elegant Survival in 2006. Since then, it has gained popularity in the United States (Zote is made in México).
Zote soap costs under a dollar per bar, and goes a long way when flaked or liquefied. It has a pleasant scent, and many uses–among them laundering clothes. Instructions are given on the official Zote website.
